A little gem of a guide, this book gives excellent synopses that help one prepare for a trip to the Himalayan region: regional overviews, potential tour routes, visa considerations, and tips for how to travel in Chinese "closed" areas. It also includes information on Buddhism's history, major schools, iconography and festivals. At the practical level, the authors offer advice on road conditions, budget accommodations, meals, and guarding oneself against "illegal matters." Over 280 richly detailed maps mark theaters, toilets, restaurants, hospitals-even places where you might be attacked by dogs and the depth of streams that you have to cross by foot.
